New Delhi, October
25: Delhi Police have arrested the prime accused Suraj in a rape case of a minor
within 36 hours of the crime. The minor victim is only seven year old and a
resident of Ranjit Nagar area of New Delhi.
The police had
to scan footage of more than 100 CCTV cameras to identify the accused. Scrutinising
the CCTV footage helped in securing an image of the accused which was easily
shared amongst the teams and later helped in his arrest.
During early
investigations, the police had come to know that another FIR had been
registered against the accused Suraj in Khayala police station under molestation
and POCSO Act and he had already been arrested. Also information percolated
that he had tried to trap two more children. However, the two other children were
lucky and escaped being trapped by him.
According to
the police, many of their teams were continuously searching the accused. On a
tip off that the accused had fled Delhi, they expanded their scope of
investigations and were able to locate him in village Kalanaur of Haryana’s Rohtak
district. The accused had grown suspicious that the police had identified him
and was on his lookout and hence had fled Delhi to hoodwink them.
Delhi Police
were investigating an incident which occurred on the evening of October 22. In Ranjit
Nagar area of New Delhi, the accused had lured a seven-year-old girl and raped
her. Immediately after the incident, he fled from the spot. By identifying him and
with his arrest from Rohtak, the case seems to have been solved rather quickly.
Delhi police
considers getting clue about him through CCTV cameras, identifying him and
arresting him from another state, and all that so soon, as a big achievement.
Police
officials familiar with the case said that the girl is currently admitted in a hospital
and is under medical treatment.
Earlier, the
Delhi Commission for Women had issued a notice to the Delhi Police asking them
to take strict action at the earliest in this case.
