Gandhinagar, March 9: More than four rapes were reported daily in Gujarat in the last two years, informed the state government to the house in the ongoing budget session of the state assembly.

A series of questions were put up by Congress legislators in the state assembly, where they asked the government to provide information regarding the number of rapes in Gujarat in the last two years.

Replying to the question, the home department stated that a total of 3095 rapes were registered with the Gujarat Police during the calendar years 2019 and 2020. This means that more than four rapes were reported everyday during the said period in Gujarat. It should be noted that not all rapes and sexual offences are reported to the police by victims, studies have consistently shown.

The maximum number of rapes registered in 2019 and 2020 were as follows: in Ahmedabad, 620 followed by 465 in Surat, 204 in Vadodara, 203 in Rajkot, 140 in Banaskantha, 123 in Kutch, 115 in Patan and 102 in Bhavnagar district.
