Bijnor (Uttar Pradesh), September 20:
To live up to an image is usually difficult, but easy for Uttar Pradesh which
is fast assuming the epitaph of ‘Rape Capital of India’. Members of opposition
parties have always been pointing to the increase in crime, especially sexual
assaults against women, which they say shows a dismal scenario for the state
and can be easily seen in statistics.
One
such terrible incident comes to light from Bijnor this week. Three men
allegedly raped a girl who was traveling back to Delhi from Bijnor. The victim,
a resident of Delhi, was returning home after attending a marriage in Bijnor on
September 13, when she was raped.
The
crime happened in Sabalpur Bitra village which comes under the jurisdiction of
Nangal Soti police station.
After
attending her relative’s marriage, the next day she went to the village bus stand to
return home. While waiting for the bus, three men in a car enquired where she was
headed. When she said she was en route to Delhi, the accused lured her with a lift
to Bijnor city so that she could easily take connecting conveyance to Delhi.
After
she joined the accused in the car willingly accepting the lift, she alleges
that they raped her at knifepoint and immediately fled from the crime spot,
when some alert locals reached the spot.
The
victim also said that Bijnor police did not take any action against the accused
and didn’t even file an FIR. Ultimately a local helped the girl and dropped her
safely back at her acquaintance’s residence.
