(Uttar Pradesh), September 16: Uttar Pradesh police on Sunday has saved a rape
survivor who attempted to commit suicide by jumping into river Ganges, after
accusing one of her relatives of sexual assault, in Kanpur.
According to
Pramod Kumar, a top police official of the district, the victim, a native of Mirzapur
district, has accused a relative employed with Uttar Pradesh’s traffic police of
allegedly raping her and making an obscene video of the act. She attempted to commit
suicide but was saved, adding that the woman had dialed the police helpline before
her suicide attempt of jumping into the river.
"The
boatmen and divers present in the Ganges on the spot saved the woman from
drowning. On the complaint of the woman, the police have started investigation
by registering a case against the TSI and his son," the official said. The
police said that the accused has been identified as TSI Girja Singh Tiwari and
the survivor has accused him of allegedly sexually assaulting her and then
recording an obscene video.
"The
victim informed us that her accused uncle had called her to Kanpur on September
10 and then he allegedly along with his son assaulted her. Frustrated by the
antics of the accused, the victim attempted suicide by jumping into the Ganges
after reaching Jajmau Gangapul, on late Sunday evening," the police
official said and added that a case has been registered against TSI Girja
Shankar Tiwari and his son Amit Tiwari based on the complaint of the rape
victim in Kanpur’s Chakeri police station.
