Meerut (Uttar Pradesh), August 8: Today, a shameful incident
has been reported from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh; a female patient at Meerut’s Lala
Lajpat Rai Medical College was sexually molested by an employee of the medical
college where she was undergoing treatment.
An employee, engaged in the Medical College as ‘Sweeper’,
tried to rape the woman hospitalised in their ‘unclaimed’ ward.
The Medical College employee, who was under influence of
alcohol, entered the ward where the woman was undergoing treatment and tried to
rape her. A complaint was made to the police regarding the incident on Saturday
night. Police officials were investigating the incident till late in the night,
post which the accused has been taken into custody.
According to the police, at 9:00 pm on Thursday, the accused
cleaning worker entered the ward where the woman was undergoing treatment after
finishing his duty hours. The accused, who was in a drunken state, started
molesting the female patient. He even tried to rape her. He ran away from the
spot, only after the molested woman started screaming, according to a consultancy
of employees who reported the incident to the police. The accused was on duty from
12:00 noon to 7:00 pm.
After police interrogation, the accused has confessed to
going to the ward two hours after his duty was over but has refused the
allegations of molestation and attempt at rape. Pramod Kumar Gautam, a part of
the investigating team, says that the accused is still being interrogated, and
police will take appropriate action based on the facts.
The police is also trying to investigate why the ward was
left unprotected, that too during the night. Other staff members, including
Sirajuddin – the employee on duty, were also being interrogated in connection
to the incident. Initially, the matter was kept under wraps so it was only on
Saturday that it reached the police.
The police while trying to trace the family of the victim,
uncovered the fact that the 22 year-old-woman with whom the incident happened,
has been unclaimed at the Medical College for the last two years.
