Ahmedabad: March 16: A woman was allegedly raped by the brother
of her ex-husband on Saturday in the presence of her current husband who was
tied up by the rapist and his accomplices. The incident occurred on the
Baran-Atru State Highway near Chajawar village in Rajasthan.
Superintendent of Police of Baran district Vineet Kumar Bansal
said that the woman was travelling with her husband, her 18 month old son and
her minor sister. They were returning home, after a visit to a temple, on a
motorbike when they were waylaid at around 10 pm.
The assailants beat then up and took the family to a nearby field. They hit the man
and bound his hands and feet. The main accused, who the woman identified as
Dinesh, then raped her in front of her current husband. Dinesh is the younger brother of her former husband.
Police has detained Dinesh and two of his accomplices on Sunday.
A case of kidnapping and gang-rape has been registered against five persons.
The woman, who was 30-years-old, separated from her first
husband due to strife after being unable to bear a child with him. She
remarried through "Nata Pratha", a local tradition which allows a
marital relationship without a wedding ceremony.
According to the police, the accused fled from the spot after
the crime. The woman along with her child and sister managed to reach the main
road and seek help from passers-by. The passers-by informed the police about
the incident.
Mr Bansal said the police immediately reached the spot and took
the victim for medical examination in the night and her statement was recorded
before a magistrate the next day. The husband and all the others were
physically fine. Police are investigating how the culprits knew about the
movements of the victim and her family and are on the lookout for the other
accused persons.
